Subluxation

Wednesday, July 12th, 2017

Have you heard this seemingly complicated term: subluxation? Subluxations are misalignments in one or more of your vertebrae that cause nerve interference. Treating them is one of the foremost goals of chiropractic care. Dr. Jason Brim, D.C., Chiropractic Director at Chiro One Wellness Centers of South Elgin , shares some lesser known causes of subluxations and why ongoing chiropractic care is crucial to generate self-healing and overall health and wellness.

“Subluxations interfere with the information your brain sends through the spinal cord and nerves to every single cell, tissue and organ in the body,” says Dr. Jason. “And the body is unable to function at 100 percent.”

Treating Subluxations

The Three Ts

Dr. Jason says that subluxations can occur at any age and the main causes are considered the “Three Ts”: trauma, toxins and thoughts.

“Trauma is the most well-known and easiest to understand as this often causes subluxation solely by sheer force,” says Dr. Jason. Most people only think of major traumas like car accidents or falls, but your body experiences micro traumas every day—and these may surprise you. Behaviors or habits can cause subluxation—like continuously carrying a purse or bag on the same side of your body, wearing high heels, sleeping on your stomach, crossing your legs or looking down at a computer monitor for long periods of time.

Toxins, as a cause of subluxation, may not be as obvious. Think of your body as one big conglomerate of chemicals—when the body is healthy and balanced chemically, it’s in a state of homeostasis. Depending on the toxic chemicals you take in through food, drink and your environment, your body’s homeostasis can be disrupted and become imbalanced. Toxins can get into the body in many ways: through processed and GMO foods, air pollution, chemicals in your cleaning supplies and even the water you’re drinking—and the plastic bottle it came in. “These imbalances can cause muscle contraction or change fiber length in the muscles,” he explains. “And these changes in muscle tone can cause a subluxation or subluxations.”

Dr. Jason says the third “T,” thoughts (a.k.a. stress), is the number one cause of subluxations. Forbes recently reported that 83 percent of working adults in the United States say they are stressed about their job. Think about it: you can be lying on a sandy beach somewhere, but can feel completely stressed if you start thinking about the work and problems you have back at home. “When you are stressed, the muscles in your neck and upper back become tight. You may even unconsciously rub your shoulders or neck,” he says. “This tension can cause subluxation, plus these emotional stressors can also cause a chemical imbalance.”

Treating Subluxations

According to Dr. Jason, chiropractic care is the only way to treat subluxations. And this doesn’t mean a one-time visit to a chiropractor, but ongoing treatment. Your chiropractor will locate, analyze and correct subluxations and work with you on the causes.”

“Committing to chiropractic care is a lifestyle choice—just like exercising and eating well,” says Dr. Jason. “It’s impossible to eliminate all the micro traumas, toxins and stress in daily life, but choosing chiropractic as a preventative and proactive measure is vital to your path to optimal health.”

Rest easy: Chiropractic adjustments for insomnia

chiropractic adjustments for insomnia

Patients suffering from insomnia may be very miserable and deserve attentive, sensitive chiropractic care.

Chiropractic adjustments, nutritional and lifestyle suggestions can help your patients recover from insomnia and develop healthier sleep.

A recent paper published in the Journal of Sleep Medicine & Disorders suggests that some insomnia cases could be caused by complex chemical interactions in the brain resulting from subluxation. This would explain, potentially, why chiropractic adjustment provides relief for many insomnia patients. The author, Lenard Vernon, DC, suggests in his paper, “The Chiropractic Subluxation and Insomnia: Could there be a connection?” that over time a pattern of chronic insomnia may develop and contribute to further discomfort and sleeplessness.

Successfully treating patients with insomnia may require adjustments to correct the subluxation and interfere with chronic insomnia. Alongside adjustments, other treatments and lifestyle interventions may promote healthy sleep and help your patients heal.

Evaluate the source of insomnia

In order to treat insomnia patients effectively, chiropractors should carefully evaluate the patient and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

“In my clinical experience, a combination of treatments are the most effective,” says Scott Schreiber, DC of Delaware Back Pain and Sports Rehabilitation Centers. “I find that insomnia is the clinical manifestation of many other sub-clinical issues.”

Schreiber suggests that chiropractors look for other health problems occurring alongside insomnia and contributing to it, such as thyroid problems and mental health concerns. Patients should be asked about sleeping habits, diet, stress levels and daily schedule. Not following the body’s natural circadian rhythm by consistently going to bed and awaking at the same time each day may also have a negative impact on insomnia sufferers, according to Schreiber.

Adjustments for insomnia

“High-velocity low-amplitude manipulation (HVLA) to the areas of joint dysfunction will immediately reduce pain and induce muscle relaxation,” says Schreiber. “This by itself will allow the body to be more comfortable and get to sleep easier.”

As Vernon’s paper explains, subluxation may contribute to endocrine system problems by creating unhealthy nerve impulses. This chemical dysfunction then causes imbalanced brain chemistry, contributing to primary insomnia in patients. By addressing the subluxation, adjustment may help correct the brain’s dopamine and serotonin levels, thereby providing possible relief from insomnia.

Chris Mabry of Ability Chiropractic in Columbus, Ohio claims that adjustments can also address insomnia by improving other aspects of nervous system functioning, such as heart rate variability.

“It is postulated that improvement is due to a more efficiently functioning spine and nervous system…One predictor of sleep efficiency is heart rate variability, which is positively impacted by chiropractic care,” says Mabry.

Other strategies to treat insomnia

Alongside adjustments, you may want to recommend other interventions to your patient. As part of your comprehensive treatment plan, you may need to suggest nutritional supplements and other lifestyle changes.

Schreiber says patients should reduce caffeine and sugar intake and consider adding stress management techniques, such as exercise or yoga. Patients may also use supplements, under careful guidance from the chiropractor, to treat insomnia.

“They are magnesium, Valerian root, passion flower, 5-htp, melatonin and tryptophan. The aforementioned either promote relaxation or increase the body’s production of serotonin, the sleep hormone,” Schreiber says.

Watch for improvement

In time, sleep should begin to improve and other symptoms should start to disappear. Patients should be regularly evaluated for progress. If necessary, change the treatment plan and look for other possible strategies. Insomnia is complex, and treatment may not be immediate.

“This will take time to accomplish. As sleep quality improves, the patient will have less fatigue, be more alert, be less stressed, and will get sick less. Anxiety and depression may also improve,” says Schreiber.

Child birth and Infant Subluxation

Childbirth and Infant Subluxations The Delivery The birth process, even under natural and controlled conditions, is potentially traumatic. During the pushing stage of labor, the spine, particularly the neck, may be injured as the baby is compressed and pushed down the birth canal. As the baby is compressed, the small bones of the spine may be pushed out of natural alignment. This causes the nerves to become stretched or twisted, and the vital communication system is disrupted. This neurological disturbance is called a subluxation, and it may result in the failure of one or more parts of the body, as well as health in general. Subluxations can also foster the onset of sickness and disease as the body weakens. The Doctor of Chiropractic specializes in the detection and correction of subluxations. Instead of treating the symptoms of the disease, the chiropractor corrects the subluxation so that normal body functions may take place. Is a Subluxation Serious? A subluxation causes a neurological disturbance. All body functions are controlled by the brain sending and receiving messages over nerves. During a natural birth, newborns frequently suffer subluxations as they are pulled, twisted, and compressed. Damage may be more severe in a difficult delivery, as noted by Doris Haire, C.N.M., infants may sustain skull fractures, intestinal hemorrhage, cord compression, brain damage, damage to the facial nerve and facial paralysis. Damage to the spine and delicate nerve tissue is also common. Brewer and Presser report that the vertebrae are easily pulled out of alignment by excessive and forceful extension of the infant’s head with forceps. Checking Your Child Complications of uncorrected subluxations may be serious, resulting in respiratory depression, and in some cases SIDS. Infants who survive and are properly diagnosed for subluxations have a better chance of having the neurological defects ultimately eliminated.6 A wide range of subluxations may occur, primarily due to the stretch injury and/or compression of the spinal cord and brain stem. As the vertebrae are forced out of their natural alignment, spinal and cranial nerve roots, as well as the dura and surrounding structures, may be torn. Most authorities believe that brain stem and spinal injuries at birth are essentially attributable to excessive longitudinal traction, especially when force is combined with flexion and torsion of the spinal axis during delivery. Although birth subluxations may cause immediate symptoms, there may be far-reaching effects that are manifested for years. The child’s ability to fight against disease, for example, may be lowered. Cold, ear infections, colic, and other illnesses may result.3.5.6.7 Subluxations may also interfere with internal organ function, resulting in the inability to produce chemicals responsible for raising and lowering body temperature as needed.5 Kunert indicated that the body’s immune response in the production of anti-viral and anti-bacterial agents to fight infections in greatly compromised due to vertebral lesions (subluxations).5 When should your infant be checked for subluxations? Newborn infants should be checked within hours after birth by your chiropractor. Subluxations are a serious threat to your newborn’s health. Your child should be checked frequently by a chiropractor to ensure the best opportunity to grow and develop normally. Page 1 Page 2 Childbirth and Infant Subluxations (con’t) Is Chiropractic Safe? The chiropractic approach to health care is natural. It does not try to stimulate or inhibit normal body function. Instead, the chiropractor addresses the important relationship between the nervous system and disease. Various symptoms, such as colic, respiratory distress, fever, earaches, and a lowered resistance may be manifested in the young child due to abnormal body function caused by subluxations.3,5,6 In light of this, your chiropractor may be the best doctor to help your child improve his or her health.

How does Chiropractic Help you Overall?

Wednesday, June 21st, 2017

Did you know that we live our life through our nervous system? When we have a better nervous system, we have a better life. It’s that simple. From our ability to digest our food, enjoy a sunset, or be delighted by a baby’s giggle, our nervous system allows us to experience life more abundantly. If, however, your nervous system is compromised, you’re not able to live life to the fullest.

What Does Health Mean to You?

If you were to ask someone on the street, “How do you know if you’re healthy?” you might be met with answers that mention high energy and alertness, or maybe simply, “I just feel good.” But many rarely equate health to function — when all of the body parts are working as designed. And yet, that’s exactly what true health is.

So instead of thinking of the word health, think about having a sense of ease. If you have ease, which is the opposite of dis-ease, then consider yourself to have health. If there’s a lack of ease, you’re experiencing dis-ease, and chances are, your nervous system is not functioning as it was meant to.

Benefits of Chiropractic Care

Ensuring that your nervous system is free of interference through chiropractic can help you feel great. Many patients of ours also report improvements like:

  • Reduced back and neck pain
  • Enhanced immune system
  • Improved range of motion
  • Increased function
  • Heightened energy and mood

If you’d like to experience life to the fullest with a properly functioning nervous system, we invite you to contact our practice to get your spine checked.
